A task list only helps if you look at it. On a phone, mine hides behind a lock screen and a stack of notifications, and by the time I've opened the app I've been distracted twice. On a little screen next to the keyboard, it's just there.
That's the whole idea behind Todoist Companion and Asana Companion. They're deliberately small. Each one shows what's due today and what's overdue, and lets you finish things from the device.
Just two lists
You get "due today" and "overdue", and nothing else. I went back and forth on adding more, and kept deciding against it. A desk device should answer one question well: what do I need to do now? The big planning, next week and next month, still belongs in Todoist or Asana itself.
Both apps keep themselves up to date. Add a task on your laptop and it turns up on the device soon after, without you pressing anything.
Done is one tap
Tap the ring next to a Todoist task, or the box next to an Asana one, and it's marked complete in your account straight away. It's done everywhere you use the service, not just on the device.
You can also add a quick task, due today, from the on-screen keyboard. That's for the thing you suddenly remember while you're in the middle of something else.
Connecting your account
Each app connects with a token from your own account. In Todoist that's your personal API token. In Asana it's a personal access token.
You only enter it once. You can type it on the device, but typing a long code on a touch screen is nobody's idea of fun, so you can also send it from the app's store page over the USB cable.
From then on, the device talks to Todoist or Asana directly over your Wi-Fi. There's no server of mine in the middle, or anyone else's. Your tasks go from your account to your desk and nowhere else.
They won't break anything
The apps can complete tasks and add tasks. They can't delete anything, and they don't move tasks between projects. I don't think a stray tap on a desk gadget should ever be able to cost you work.
Which one?
Whichever matches the service you already use. They look and behave the same, so if your team happens to use both, one of each on the same desk works fine.
Each app's store page lists the boards it runs on, and both have a trial. Connect your real account and see your real list before you buy.
